Jonny Wright

Writer of Up North

Jonny is a writer, actor and rapper from Yorkshire.  He has received commissions from Talawa,  Rattling Stick and Film 4 and had three plays produced by Immediate Theatre.  His sitcoms have been optioned by the BBC, Channel 4 and Hat Trick and he has recently been writing for Cartoon Network.

Jonny has written and directed a short film, Huey and Louis, that has been shown in six film festivals in UK and USA and was recently screened at BAFTA as part of Triforce short films festival.

He was selected for b3 Media’s Talent Lab, has worked with Mike Leigh as an actor and starred in his own short play, Swallow The Leader,  at the Bush Theatre.

Awards:

Winner : BBC All Mixed Up sitcom competition; The Brian Glover Award; Soho Theatre’s Westminster Prize (2nd).

Shortlisted : The Alfred Fagon Award; The Verity Bargate Award.

Under his hip hop name of XYM, aka ‘The Yorkshire Rapper’, he has released seven albums, had radio play on BBC Radio1Xtra, Suspect Packages show and has been a special guest artist for ITCH FM and for I Am Hip-Hop’s radio show. His track Rocky has been admitted into the Black Cultural Archives.
