Black History Month

We asked Ada, a member of the Maya Productions crew, what BHM meant to her.

What does Black History Month mean to you?

Black History Month is a time to celebrate and amplify the achievements and contributions of the Black people of the U.K. It gives a platform to highlight the often overlooked stories and lived experience of a diverse community that have made a significant impact on society.

What theatre, arts, or cultural experience have you enjoyed recently?

I saw tragicomedy, Something To Take Off The Edge,” a captivating one man show by Errol McGlashan at the Camden Fringe Festival. It explored addiction, literacy, mental health, and the deep bonds of friendship.

What gives you joy?

Spending time with friends and family

An addiction to Bravo reality tv.

Drawing (even though I’m awful at it).

How do you like to spend your Sundays?

Relaxing and listening to music.

What motivates you to work in theatre and the arts?

It’s the opportunity to champion diversity and inclusivity through the work at Maya Productions. The growing prominence of Black and global majority shows and narratives within the UK theatre scene represents the recognition and importance of lived experiences and diverse cultural stories waiting to be shared.

Describe your role at Maya Productions

In my role as an administrator at Maya Productions, I wear many hats and play a part in supporting the smooth operation of the organisation. One of my key responsibilities is serving as the project producer for our School Playwriting Programme, Diverse Voices. The programme aims to empower South Asian and Global Majority students, enabling them to use writing for performance as a medium for self-expression while demystifying the processes of theatre and inspiring an inclusive community of future artists and industry professionals. Witnessing the impact of Diverse Voices has been incredibly rewarding.
