Redrafting Up North was a really challenging task. The key was doing lots of character work on back stories. It was similar to work I’ve done as an actor in the past in play rehearsals and preparation for movie roles. The difference here being that I have to do it for all of the characters and not just my own, so it was very time consuming. However it was absolutely worth it and after doing that work, the play became much more layered as I knew the characters so much more. The lesson here I learned is that there are no short cuts in the writing process. It was very hard work, but worth it in the end.
