Maya Productions is collaborating with Darts – Doncaster’s Creative Health and Learning Charity – to offer paid participatory traineeships for emerging and early career global majority artists.

We are recruiting two paid Participatory Artist Trainees who are at an early stage in their career or wish to expand their experience of using their artform to deliver participatory activities that impact positively on people’s life, learning and health. This is an incredible opportunity to learn, practise and develop alongside highly experienced artists.

We encourage artists of any age (above 18) to apply, as long as you are early on in your journey as a participatory arts practitioner. You may be a recent creative graduate, or an experienced artist who has never delivered workshops with others.

You may be a singer who wants to develop their expertise in leading a community choir, or a musician who wants to understand how to use their artform with adults with lived experience of mental ill health.

Our focus for these traineeships is artists whose artforms are movement, dance, theatre or music (singing, digital, percussion, instrumental, etc).

You could be an interdisciplinary artist who works across more than one artform.

A key aspect of this project is to develop the skills and career progression of global majority participatory arts practitioners in the field of Creative Health and Learning.

This call out is targeted at individuals who self-identify as a global majority background artist and who are local to South Yorkshire.

Key Dates:

Deadline: 9am, 13th April 2026

Interview dates (online): The morning of April 21st.

Traineeships: Each successful Trainee will be allocated 1 x 3-month opportunity during one of the following time periods:

PRODUCER: BENNY AND THE GREYCATS & ROUTES TO ROOTS

Maya Productions is seeking an experienced Producer to lead the development phase of Benny and the Greycats, a new musical exploring the journey of an Anglo-Indian family of railway workers and musicians who leave behind their swing band to build a new life in 1960s Sheffield. This phase will culminate in a rehearsed reading at Sheffield Theatres, presented to industry and local community audiences.

The Producer will take a strategic lead in generating interest, partners and potential co-producers to progress the musical towards a full production and national tour in 2027.

In addition, the role includes producing a short Routes to Roots intergenerational participation programme in partnership with Roshni Asian Women’s Resource Centre and King Ecgbert School. Building on our 2023–25 work with South Asian communities in Sheffield, Croydon and Bradford, this pilot project will explore new creative approaches, embracing digital possibilities and will culminate in a public outcome such as a sound walk, video installation or live performance.

Fee: Freelance, £175–£200 per day (depending on experience)
Time commitment: 1.5 days per week (with some flexibility around peak delivery periods)
Contract period: 5 January – 23 May 2026, with an intention to extend

Interview: 12th December 2025
Start date: January 2026

We are recruiting nine paid Artist Trainees who are at an early stage in their career or who are looking to grow their experience in using their artform to lead participatory, socially impactful work in areas of life, learning, and health.

This is a unique opportunity to learn, practise, and develop alongside experienced artists working in the fields of Creative Health and Learning.

We welcome applications from artists of all ages, as long as you are early in your journey as a participatory arts practitioner. You might be:

  • A recent creative graduate,

  • An experienced artist who has never delivered workshops,

  • A singer interested in leading a community choir,

  • Or a musician wanting to work with adults with lived experience of mental ill health.

We are particularly interested in artists working in movement, dance, drama, theatre, or music (including singing, digital, percussion, instrumental, etc.). Interdisciplinary artists who combine artforms are also encouraged to apply.

This programme specifically supports global majority artists (people who identify as Black, Asian, Brown, dual-heritage, Indigenous to the global south, or have been racialised as ‘ethnic minorities’), living in South Yorkshire.

Key Dates:

  • Application deadline: 9am, 15th September 2025

  • Interviews (online): 23rd and morning of 24th September 2025

  • Traineeships: Each Trainee will take part in one 3-month placement during one of the following periods:

Maya is seeking an experienced exhibition designer to lead the design and delivery of our Routes to Roots Exhibition, taking place at Bradford City Library from 6th October 2025.

 The exhibition will build on previous designs by Joyluck Studios (Croydon) and Monika Dutta (Sheffield), but create something unique for Bradford that respond to the site and be visually engaging and accessible. 

 We’re looking for someone with:

  • Proven experience in exhibition design, having showcased work in in a gallery, museum or other cultural or community space
  • A strong record of working in visual arts/design – ideally with some experience of heritage projects.
  • Budget management and construction oversight skills
  • Lived experience and understanding of South Asian cultures and migration
  • Bradford/Yorkshire-based

Fee: £2,000

Production Budget: £2,000 (some elements are already created)

Maya makes world class, theatre, arts and heritage projects that create change, bringing together individuals and organisations who passionately want their work to enable racial justice and social change.

We are recruiting for an Executive Producer. Over the past three years, Maya Productions has experienced significant growth and, with the support of our board, developed an ambitious programme to build on this progress.

In this pivotal role, the Executive Producer will collaborate closely with our Artistic Director and Administrator/Project Producer to deliver annual business plans. Responsibilities will include overseeing organisational finances, governance, and policies, spearheading fundraising efforts, producing productions and projects, and supporting and line-managing freelance producers. The role will primarily be remote, with attendance at in-person meetings and project events as required.

This is a unique and exciting opportunity for a global majority arts practitioner who is passionate about achieving racial justice and driving meaningful change in the arts sector.

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic individual with:

  • Proven experience as a theatre producer, with a strong understanding of touring requirements.
  • The ability to manage multiple priorities while staying calm, considerate, and solutions-focused.
  • A passion for working with diverse communities across the UK.
  • A commitment to Maya Productions’ mission and the ability to support the delivery of our ambitious programme of work.

 

Additional information

  • Fee: Freelance position, £165 – £200 per day / £35,000 – £43,000 pro-rata (dependent on experience).
  • Days: 3 days per week.
  • Duration: 5 month contract, with the intention to transition into a permanent role.
  • Start Date: March 2025.

We are recruiting an Assistant Producer for production of a new piece of theatre, Dynamic Flights.

This play has been developed over 2023 and 2024 through two phases of participatory creative sessions with residents in two Sheffield housing schemes for people living with long term Mental Ill Health. The show will tour in South Yorkshire with a professional cast and creative team, and participants will be part of the rehearsal process.

This is an exciting opportunity for an early career/emerging producer from a Global Majority background.

The Assistant Producer will produce a new piece of theatre, Dynamic Flights, which will tour to community venues in South Yorkshire. The Assistant Producer will be supported by a Producer who has been part of the Dynamic Flights project through all project phases and has a detailed knowledge of the project.

Fee: £1,250  (Includes any training, all production meetings, production period and evaluation/de-brief meetings).

We are seeking a Sound Designer who will bring together the sound and music elements to realise the full potential sound world of Dynamic Flights. The play  also has original compositions/songs, composed by Dan Loops.

Fee: £1,500  (Includes any training, all production meetings, production period and evaluation/de-brief meetings).

Súper Chefs is an Offie award-nominated and 4* reviewed bi-lingual, interactive Latin American family musical by Betsy Picart with music by Ariel Cubría, exploring family relationships, food, and gender roles.

We are looking for a talented individual to fill the position of Engagement Coordinator.

As Engagement Coordinator you will lead the redesign, development and delivery of the Engagement and Participation Programme of Súper Chefs, with a particular focus on planning and delivery of the programme to connect with the Latinx communities residing around the tour venues.

Period of engagement: As soon as possible – November 2024
